How We Are Funded

Funding comes from four core areas:

Social Enterprise – retail
Operated by our companions, our retail stores generate over two thirds of our income and this is a growing number. One day we wish to cover all of our operating costs through our stores so that we become full self-sustainable.

Housing Benefit
Our companions are required to pass over their housing benefit entitlement directly to the community. They do not receive any other state benefit while they are in our care.

Generous Cash Donations
We are grateful to our many supporters who continue to support our project through regular one off donations, often with gift aid, as well those who choose to leave a legacy in our name.

Sponsorships and Grants
Emmaus Hampshire has a number of strategic partners who sponsor us for specific capital projects or targeting activities.

How we turn your £1 donation into £11 worth of value

In 2012, a group of researchers established that for every £1 invested in an established Emmaus community, £11 is generated in social, environmental and economic returns.

In their report, they identified that:

  • Keeping people out of hospital, and helping them to be safe and well, saved the Department of Heath £1.5m
  • Local governments costs spent on hostel accommodation, drug and alcohol services and landfill benefitted by £2.4m
  • Keeping people in work and out of prison saved the Ministry of Justice £0.8m

The report found that Emmaus communities successfully provide a place for people in vulnerable housing situations to rebuild their lives by offering them meaningful work and support. Significant benefits were linked to substantial improvements in companions’ physical and mental health, including reductions in substance misuse.

Every donation makes a huge difference to the lives of our companions, and also has a significant effect on society in general.
