Tuesday, 13 December, 2022Following yonder star this Christmas

Star of wonder, Star of night…..The amazing thing about volunteering at Emmaus Hampshire is that you never know what will come through the door next. This week we received a telescope, not just any telescope but an 11in reflecting Schmidt-Cassegrain instrument capable of seeing galaxies as well as the rings of Saturn. It stood about 5 ft tall, weighed 30kg and took two Companions to shift. Retired physicist and amateur astronomer John Little was given the telescope as a retirement present, however after 11 years of stargazing outside in the cold, he has decided to hang up his eyepieces, stow away his star maps and concentrate on electronics indoors. We are very grateful for this generous donation. It sold within 48 hours in our volunteer-run ebay shop to a keen planet photographer from Oxfordshire, and raised over £2000 for the Emmaus community of Companions living and working at Bar End, Winchester. These clear cold nights are perfect for seeing planets and stars even without a telescope. Do look up!
